Chypre

SHEEP-ruh Scent Family

A fragrance family traditionally balancing a bright citrus opening with mossy, woody and resinous depth. Bergamot, oakmoss and labdanum are classic reference points for the accord.

Chypre describes a family associated with the contrast between citrus brightness and a mossy, woody or resinous background. Flowers, fruit, leather or greener notes can change the balance within that broad direction.

Coty’s Chypre, launched in 1917, is a historical reference for the family. Both the house’s account and the Osmothèque’s centenary event connect it with the development of chypre perfumery. That history does not make every fragrance called a chypre the same composition.

The classic bergamot, oakmoss and labdanum combination is useful vocabulary for understanding the style. A category label alone does not establish a modern perfume’s materials, so use its own description and your sample to explore the particular interpretation.

When comparing chypres, notice how much citrus or fruit you enjoy against the drier background, and whether flowers or leather change the character in a way you like. Return to the later scent before choosing: you may prefer the opening of one sample but the settled character of another. The category does not prescribe a season, gender or level of formality.
