Projection
How noticeable a fragrance is in the space around the wearer. Projection concerns its reach at a particular time; longevity concerns how long it remains detectable.
Projection describes a perfume’s presence around you. A fragrance may be easy to notice across a table, more apparent during a close conversation or mainly detectable near the application area.
It helps to distinguish three questions. Projection concerns the scent around the wearer, sillage describes the trail associated with their passage, and longevity concerns how long it remains detectable. These words let you ask for the kind of wear experience you want more precisely.
Application, the surroundings and the observer all form part of that experience. For a useful comparison, try samples in a similar way during ordinary wear. Ask someone you trust how noticeable the fragrance is at the distance that matters to you, and check again later.
Choose the presence that fits your plans. For a quieter setting, begin with a small application and assess it before adding more. When reading a review, look for the version worn and the circumstances described: a scent noticed outdoors on a moving wearer may give a different impression in a small room.
