ScentTrek
Also known as: Scent Trek, ScentTrek®
Givaudan’s proprietary approach to researching natural scents through headspace sampling and using the findings to develop fragrance accords.
ScentTrek studies natural scent sources to inform perfume creation. Givaudan’s 2006 annual report describes non-destructive research expeditions and reconstructions used in fine fragrances, including the original Black Orchid.
Headspace sampling examines the scented air around a source. Analysis helps researchers understand its components; a perfumer can then develop a reconstruction from fragrance materials. The resulting accord is distinct from an essential oil extracted from the source plant.
Tom Ford’s Ombré Leather Reserve lists silver juniper and pinyon wood ScentTrek among its key notes. The brand connects its juniper character with research in the Chisos Mountains. The technology name describes the creative approach; it does not tell you how strongly the finished perfume will wear or whether you will prefer it.
