Solid Cologne

A perfume in a solid or balm format, applied by touch rather than sprayed. The base and scent concentration depend on the product.

Solid cologne carries fragrance in a solid or balm base. A tin, compact or stick lets you apply it by touch, making the applicator one of the main differences from a liquid spray.

Fulton & Roark’s instructions for its wax-based solids suggest swiping lightly across the surface rather than digging out a chunk, then applying to the suggested areas. Close the container after use and follow the directions for your particular format.

Check the ingredients if the base matters to your choice. Fulton Solid Fragrance, for example, lists mineral oil, ceresin and other ingredients, including SD Alcohol 40-B. Solid therefore describes its physical format, rather than establishing that every product is all-natural or alcohol-free.

For choosing one, compare the scent during wear and whether you enjoy applying it this way. If you already know a spray with the same name, try the solid too: its format, amount applied and composition give you a separate product to assess.
