Clone

Also known as: Dupe

A perfume described as closely resembling another fragrance, often also called a dupe. The term is used for a scent comparison rather than a standard measure of similarity.

A clone or dupe is a fragrance intended, or described by wearers, to resemble another perfume. Brands also use terms such as inspired by or impression. Those labels point to a comparison; they do not give a fixed percentage of similarity.

Dossier explicitly describes Woody Sandalwood as inspired by Le Labo’s Santal 33 and sells it under its own name. For Woody Sandalwood itself, one wearer enjoys the dry sandalwood-incense impression after its greener opening, while some others find an unwanted pickle-like impression. These are useful scent details to compare in a sample.

When looking for an alternative, decide what you want to keep from the reference: perhaps its citrus opening, a dry woody character or a particular balance of sweetness. Compare those features through the development of both samples. Check the exact formats, bottle sizes and current prices when choosing between them.
