What Does Aftershave Do?

Aftershave is a product used after shaving, usually to add fragrance or moisturize the skin. A balm and an alcohol-based splash can feel very different, so choose by the formula and your skin’s needs rather than the word on the bottle.

What Is Aftershave?

Aftershave comes as a liquid splash, lotion, gel or balm. Some formulas contain alcohol and fragrance; others focus on moisturizing. Follow the product’s directions for how much to apply and whether it stays on the skin.

It isn’t the same as cologne. Cologne is primarily a fragrance, while an after-shave product is designed for the skin after shaving. Don’t spray perfume onto a freshly shaved face as a substitute.

What Are The Benefits Of Using Aftershave?

A moisturizing aftershave can help skin feel less dry after shaving. A scented splash adds fragrance, which may be the main reason you enjoy it. Neither benefit means you need an aftershave: a suitable facial moisturizer can be enough.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends moisturizing while skin is still damp after shaving. It also recommends fragrance-free products for sensitive skin.

Aftershave doesn’t seal pores or guarantee that shaving cuts won’t become infected. Don’t use a cosmetic splash to treat wounds, acne or persistent razor bumps. If a product burns or leaves your skin irritated, that isn’t a sign that it’s doing a better job.

Splash Or Balm: Which Should You Choose?

FormatWhat to checkWhen it makes sense
Liquid splashAlcohol and fragrance in the ingredient listYou enjoy the scent and your skin tolerates the formula
Balm or lotionMoisturizing ingredients and added fragranceYour skin feels dry or tight after shaving
Fragrance-free moisturizerA formula suited to your skin typeYou want moisture without an aftershave scent

Alcohol-based splashes can be drying. The AAD’s dry-skin advice recommends avoiding products containing alcohol or fragrance when skin is dry. Alcohol-free is useful information, but it doesn’t mean fragrance-free or free of other ingredients you might react to.

Which Ingredients Matter?

Glycerin is a moisturizing ingredient to look for. Beyond that, read the complete formula rather than collecting a list of fashionable botanicals. Aloe, chamomile and essential oils don’t make every product gentle, and natural ingredients aren’t a guarantee against irritation.

Proraso’s Sensitive Skin After Shave Balm is an alcohol-free option. Its published ingredient list includes fragrance, so it wouldn’t be the first choice if your goal is to avoid fragrance altogether.

Should I Use Aftershave?

Use one if you like what it adds to your routine and your skin tolerates it. If a plain moisturizer leaves your face comfortable, you don’t need another product simply because you’ve shaved.

For scent, you can choose a separate fragrance once your skin is comfortable; our perfume-strength guide explains the labels. Keep the after-shave decision focused on the skin you’re applying it to.
