What Does Eucalyptus Smell Like?

Eucalyptus smells sharp, green and camphor-like, with a cooling character that can remind you of mint or a chest rub. It works well when you want a brisk, leafy scent rather than a sweet floral.

What Does Eucalyptus Smell Like?

The most recognizable quality is a piercing freshness. Underneath it you may notice dry wood, green leaves or a slight sweetness. It isn’t the soft, sugary mint of chewing gum, and it can feel medicinal if you associate it with cold remedies.

That association is useful when shopping: if you dislike the smell of chest rub, start with a lightly scented body wash rather than a concentrated oil. If you want that sharp spa-like smell, look for eucalyptus named in the fragrance notes.

What Is Eucalyptus?

Eucalyptus is a group of trees and shrubs, many native to Australia. Scented oils are extracted from the leaves, and different species and products can smell different. A bottle of essential oil is much more concentrated than a finished scented lotion.

The Greater Blue Mountains area near Sydney is known for its eucalypt diversity.

Where Can You Find A Eucalyptus Scent?

Body washes, lotions, candles and room fragrances are useful places to look. Choose the format first: a rinse-off wash, a leave-on cream and a room fragrance have different uses. Only apply products to skin when their directions say to do so.

Bath & Body Works Eucalyptus Spearmint combines the two named scent materials. The maker’s gift-set page lists eucalyptus and spearmint oils. This is a more direct starting point for that scent than a citrus perfume with no eucalyptus listed.

For wearable perfume, check the maker’s note list before buying. Aesop Tacit highlights yuzu, vetiver and basil; it’s a green-citrus alternative, rather than a eucalyptus recommendation. Similarly, 4711 Original’s listed notes center on citrus, lavender, rosemary, neroli and petitgrain.

If you prefer the woody part of eucalyptus to its medicinal edge, try woody perfumes. For a darker earthy smell, patchouli oil has a different character.

Does Eucalyptus Smell Like Menthol?

They can smell similar: both suggest a sharp, cooling freshness. Eucalyptus oil and menthol are different materials, though, so one isn’t a reliable guide to exactly how the other will smell in a finished product.

A eucalyptus-and-spearmint blend will emphasize that minty association. A blend with woods can feel drier and less like toothpaste. Sample the complete product if you can; a single note name doesn’t tell you the balance.

Is Eucalyptus Oil Suitable For Skin?

Only use it in a product intended for that purpose and follow its directions. Poison Control warns that undiluted eucalyptus oil can irritate skin, can harm the eyes, and can cause serious poisoning if swallowed. Keep concentrated oil out of children’s reach.

Choose eucalyptus for its smell, rather than using perfume or essential oil to treat infections, insomnia or breathing problems. A pleasant scent doesn’t establish a medical benefit. Our perfume-strength guide explains why concentration also doesn’t establish skin tolerance.
