Great Cologne That Smells Like Sandalwood

Sandalwood perfumes can smell creamy, dry, spicy or leathery depending on the rest of the composition. Start with Tam Dao EDP for a sandalwood-and-cedar comparison, then try Santal 33, Santal Blush or Égoïste EDT for leather, spice or rose alongside the woods.

Four Sandalwood Directions

Diptyque Tam Dao Eau de Parfum

Diptyque lists sandalwood, cedar, cypress and coriander, with spices emphasising the wood’s creamy side. The perfume draws on co-founder Yves Coueslant’s memories of sandalwood in Vietnam.

One wearer enjoys its green, woody character and prefers the EDP to the EDT. Another discovery-set buyer likes its dry woody scent on skin but finds it fades very quickly. Pay attention to the later scent when trying it, especially if you want a persistent trail.

This is the Eau de Parfum. Diptyque also makes a Tam Dao EDT, whose description highlights myrtle alongside sandalwood, cedar and cypress; sample the concentration you intend to buy.

Le Labo Santal 33 Eau de Parfum

Le Labo’s Santal 33 combines Australian sandalwood and cedarwood with cardamom, iris, violet and spicy, leathery, musky effects. It is the one to investigate if you want leather and aromatic spice with the woods.

One owner loves how creamy it smells on their skin. Another person trying a sample finds the opening harsh and wood-stain-like, then prefers the wood-and-leather drydown. Smell both stages if the first spray seems more abrasive than the creamy sandalwood you had in mind.

Choose the EDP spray when comparing these accounts. A perfume oil, a body lotion and a room fragrance with the same Santal name are different formats.

Tom Ford Santal Blush Eau de Parfum

Santal Blush’s key notes include Australian sandalwood, cinnamon bark, carrot seed, ylang-ylang, cedarwood and benzoin. Try it for a warmer spiced floral-wood direction, particularly if the leather aspect of Santal 33 is not what you want.

One wearer enjoys its sweet, creamy woods when catching the scent in the air. Another gets a savoury spice impression that overwhelms the sandalwood they wanted. The spices deserve as much attention as the wood when deciding whether it suits you.

Chanel Égoïste Eau de Toilette

Chanel’s Égoïste composition opens with mandarin and coriander, moves through damask rose and emphasises sandalwood with vanilla and ambrette seed. It offers a rose-and-wood contrast to Tam Dao’s cypress and coriander.

One buyer in Chanel’s reviews sampled it through several full-day wears before buying a bottle. They particularly enjoy the sandalwood drydown becoming softer as it wears. If a rose-and-sandalwood fragrance sounds appealing, give it that same chance to settle before making a choice.

Égoïste and Platinum Égoïste are different scents. Check the name rather than choosing solely by the Chanel bottle shape.

Choosing Your First Two Samples

Tam Dao against Santal Blush makes a useful comparison of greener woods and warmer spice. Santal 33 against Égoïste compares leathery effects with rose and vanilla. Choose the contrast you want to understand, then keep notes on which part you enjoy most after the first spray.
