Best Perfumes That Smell Like Tonka

Sharing “tonka” in the name doesn’t make these two close substitutes. Le Labo Tonka 25 is the one to explore for woods and musk; Mancera Tonka Cola makes more sense if cherry, cinnamon and a sweet vanilla base sound tempting.

Two Tonka Perfumes to Compare

Le Labo Tonka 25: Woody and Musky

Le Labo’s Tonka 25 combines orange flower absolute, Atlas cedar, styrax resins, tonka absolute and musks. The house describes humid undergrowth and resins with a touch of vanilla. Don’t expect the name to describe everything you’ll smell. Cedar, resins and musk are good reasons to be interested in this one.

One wearer particularly enjoys its woody, vanilla-like character because it avoids smelling like cake. Another finds the sweet floral vanilla too much for their taste. If cake-like perfumes usually put you off, the first account gives you a reason to try it. Just don’t assume the sweetness will stay in the background for you: the second wearer had quite a different experience.

Compare it with sandalwood perfumes if the woody part is what interests you most.

Mancera Tonka Cola: Cherry, Cinnamon and Vanilla

Mancera lists lemon, nutmeg, cinnamon and black cherry at the opening; cola, Indonesian patchouli and orange flowers at the heart; then tonka, benzoin, labdanum and vanilla. This is where we’d go for the fun of cherry cola and spice. You should like that idea before worrying about how much tonka you’ll pick out.

One wearer enjoys a fizzy lemon-cola impression followed by spicy cinnamon. Another finds cinnamon dominates throughout the wear, with the cola effect clearer close to the skin. The cola may be what gets you curious, but you’ll want to like cinnamon too.

If You Prefer Another Kind of Sweetness

Give your sample time to settle before deciding. A cola opening might be fun, but you’ll spend time with the later woody or vanilla character as well. That part needs to earn its place on your skin.

For more fruit-led choices, try cherry with almond, liqueur or smoke. If you prefer coffee with your sweetness, these coffee perfumes cover milky, floral and boozy combinations.
