Best Perfumes That Smell Like Amber

For an amber perfume, begin with Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan, Hermès L’Ambre des Merveilles or Maison Francis Kurkdjian Grand Soir. All three explore warm amber, but their herbal, patchouli and spiced-vanilla facets give you useful differences to compare.

What Does Amber Mean Here?

Amber is a scent effect rather than a promise of fossilised resin in the bottle. In Hermès’ interview with perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena, he explains the amber convention through vanillin and labdanum. Our guide to fragrance accords explains how scent effects can be built from combinations of materials.

Ambre Sultan: Resin With Vanilla and Patchouli

Serge Lutens describes Ambre Sultan as resinous, with vanilla and patchouli. The fragrance story begins with a piece of scented amber resin kept in a thuja-wood box after a visit to Marrakech.

One wearer enjoys the amber, vanilla and dry-wood impression for cooler autumn days. Another loves the herbal opening but finds the later amber syrupy and too dense. Follow that transition if a dry herbal scent is what you want from the first spray.

L’Ambre des Merveilles: Vanilla, Labdanum and Patchouli

In the Hermès launch interview, Ellena describes vanilla meeting the warmth of labdanum and the damp quality of patchouli. This is the option to compare if patchouli is part of your interest in amber.

One wearer likes its amber-and-vanilla combination with a hint of patchouli. Another dislikes a soapy opening despite enjoying the drydown. Try it on skin and return to it later, especially if resinous scents are new to you.

Use the full name L’Ambre des Merveilles when shopping. Eau des Merveilles and L’Ombre des Merveilles are other fragrances in the family.

Grand Soir: Spiced Vanilla Amber

Maison Francis Kurkdjian describes Grand Soir EDP through cistus labdanum, lavandin and cinnamon leaf, followed by an amber-vanilla accord with benzoin facets. Put it beside Ambre Sultan if you want to compare two different approaches to resin and sweetness.

One wearer loves its vanilla-and-amber character and compares it to vanilla pudding. Another likes the opening and final drydown but finds much of the wear dominated by a cinnamon-toothpaste impression. The spice deserves as much attention as the vanilla when sampling.
