Best Perfumes That Smell Like Vanilla

Vanilla is only the starting point. The more interesting choice is what you want around it: soft heliotrope in Lavanila Pure Vanilla, peppery aromatics in Diptyque Eau Duelle EDT, or chestnut and woodsmoke in Maison Margiela By the Fireplace EDT.

Lavanila Pure Vanilla: Tonka and Heliotrope

Lavanila describes Pure Vanilla as Madagascar vanilla blended with tonka bean and heliotrope. Of these three, it’s the place to start for soft sweetness without a smoky theme. Give the heliotrope as much attention as the vanilla: the floral side matters here, despite that deceptively simple name.

One wearer gets prominent vanilla and a musky impression and wears it as a signature scent. The bottle owner who starts the same discussion finds it powdery and floral on skin, with little vanilla. Another wearer enjoys that powdery character. For a powdery vanilla lover, that disagreement is encouraging; if you’re hoping for the smell of vanilla extract, it’s a reason to try the small size first.

Choose the perfume when comparing these reactions; Pure Vanilla also names a deodorant, mist and other products.

Diptyque Eau Duelle EDT: Vanilla With Aromatic Contrast

Diptyque lists vanilla, pink pepper, cypriol and calamus for Eau Duelle Eau de Toilette, describing bright calamus against smoky cypriol. This is the most appealing starting point here if straight sweetness tends to bore you. Pepper and aromatic notes give you something else to follow.

One wearer enjoys its green, dry and peppery character with sweetness in the background. Another finds it easy to reach for but is disappointed by projection and lasting power. You’ll want to enjoy more than the first spray. Spend time with the quieter scent left later, especially if projection matters to you.

This is the EDT, which has a separate composition and review history from Eau Duelle EDP.

By the Fireplace: Chestnut and Smoky Woods

Maison Margiela’s description of By the Fireplace EDT puts pink pepper, orange flower and clove above chestnut, guaiac wood and cade oil. Vanilla, cashmeran and Peru balsam form the base. Put this first on your sample list if roasted chestnut and woodsmoke sound as tempting as vanilla. You should want the smoke, too.

One wearer enjoys it despite smoke not being their favourite note, but wonders whether it feels more like a winter room fragrance than something to wear. Another finds the cloves and chestnut comforting even though they don’t usually favour woody perfumes. That room-fragrance comparison gets at the real decision: do you want to wear the smoky scene? You can love a fireplace without wanting to smell like one.

Coffee, Tobacco or Tonka Instead?

For vanilla with coffee and flowers, compare the original Black Opium EDP in our coffee list. For tobacco, cocoa and spice, start with Tobacco Vanille in our tobacco selection. Tonka 25 and Tonka Cola offer woody-musky and cherry-cola alternatives.
